A trip to the River of Crystals is one of the most beautiful travel routes in Colombia. Take a charter flight from Bogotá to La Macarena, close to the Crystal River. The River, also known as the “River of Five Colors” is considered by many to be the “most beautiful river in the world.” During the rainy season, you can see the brightly colored plants, the sand, and beautiful rock formations in the water — they’re yellow, blue, green, red and black. The changing colors in the river are unequaled in beauty, making this one of the most unique destinations in the world. It’s not a wide river, nor super fast, and locals call it Caño Cristales. It’s less than 65 feet (20 meters) wide, and it’s not longer than 63 miles (100 km) long. The headwaters are on the southern plateau of the Serranía de la Macarena.

The best time of year to visit the Crystals River is between June 15 and early December, during rainy season when the color is most vibrant. The nature preserve is closed to visitors during other months, so it is not possible to access. During the summer, the plants are in a process of drought and the river’s appearance is completely different. Throughout the rainy season the river is beautiful, but tits color depends on the lighting and the water level. Bright, clear days lend to stronger colors. On cloudy days, the river appears more opaque. The weather conditions are luck of the draw and affect the experience significantly.
